Open Monuments Day / Heritage Day
Open Monumentendag
Next edition dates to be announced (the event was last held in 2013)
Velzeke (East Flanders province)

The Event

Velzeke is situated in the Belgian province of East Flanders, and the early settlement in its area goes back at least to Roman times, when it was a vicus situated at a crossroads in the network of Roman roads in Gallia Belgica. The provincial Archaeological Museum of Velzeke offers a rich collection of archaeological objects dating back to prehistory, Gallo-Roman period and Early Middle Ages, archaeological reconstructions of the Gallo-Roman rooms and living history activities.

The Open Monuments Day (or Heritage Day), designed to bring people into contact with the historic environment, each year opens the doors of thousands of historical buildings and sites in Europe. At Velzeke Museum, it is a special occasion for the annual living history spectacle, illustrating the life of the ancient folks. Each year a particular topic is represented in living history displays during the festival. The visitors have the opportunity to meet the Roman, Gallic and Germanic troops in fights, their military preparations and daily life. Various activities provided for adults and children make this event more than a show, but a real experience and participation in history.
