The Event

Valtice is a small town in South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic, situated 265 kilometres south-east of Prague, on the Austrian border. Valtice contains one of the most impressive Baroque residences of Central Europe, Valtice Castle, that was designed as the seat of the ruling princes of Liechtenstein in the early 18th century. Together with the neighbouring manor of Lednice, to which it is connected by a 7 kilometres long lime-tree avenue, Valtice forms the World Heritage Site Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape.

The family of Liechtenstein were active and important participants of the Napoleonic Wars, thus, Valtice commemorates both the beginning of the first Italian campaign (1796) and the battle of Austerlitz (1805), which involved men from the Liechtenstein family. Among them Johann I, prince von Liechtenstein (1760-1836) commanded the cavalry corps and then negotiated the conditions of armistice with Napoleon.

The beautiful Valtice Castle and park host in Spring the "Napoleonic Days", the annual maneuvers of the units of the Central European Napoleonic Society, involving hundreds of the napoleonic reenactors to offer the visitors an opportunity to see the military life of the early 19th century. Besides the military camp and battle demonstrations, the visitors are able to discover the daily life, weapons and uniforms of the soldiers and other features of the period.
