Cismon del Grappa / Valstagna, Vicenza (Veneto region)

The Event

Valstagna is a town located in a valley along the right bank of the river Brenta, a few kilometers from Bassano del Grappa, in Veneto region, in a beautiful natural setting with magnificent forests of pine and beech trees, clear waters, cliffs and steep slopes, the typical terraces ("masiere"), and a stunning underground world of caves, included the Oliero Caves Park, the most important karst springs in Europe thanks to their high flow of water and the spectacular limestone structures inside. Valstagna has always been deeply tied to its surrounding waters and forests, so that the local history has been strongly influenced by the fusion of these two natural elements, and the town itself has developed as a marketplace and a river port for the timber trade.

The historical origins of Valstagna followed the events of the nearby monastery of Campese (1124-1796) and those of the Serenissima Republic of Venice (1405-1796). The monks favored the demographic and economic growth of the valley through the creation of sawmills and water mills. And so from the 12th century, the timber cut in the forests started to be carried downstream along the ancient "wood roads" (like the famous Calà del Sasso with its 4444 stony steps), first to the river port to be marketed and then to the Venetian coast to be worked. The trade with Venice granted Valstagna great prestige and economic benefits, included the tax exemption. Since the 16th century Valstagna was also favored by Venice in the tobacco trade, and the tobacco plantations became soon the main source of income for the whole valley until the 19th century.

Every year at the end of August, Valstagna is home to the Brintaal Celtic Folk, one of the most important Celtic festivals in Italy, which takes place in the breathtaking scenario of the Oliero Caves Park and attracts thousands of visitors. The festival, founded in 2002, is now an outstanding event, which is rooted in the tradition and in the local territory, but also breathes through buds projected on all the Celtic lands and the future with the aim to promote the knowledge of the Celtic culture, music, traditions, cuisine, as well as the similarities between the Celtic world and the Venetian folks. It's also an event dedicated to the beautiful valley in which it is hosted, its traditions and charming places hidden among streams, ancient villages and clearings in the woods.

Folk music is music that should be enjoyed and shared by all, and not only limited to a narrow circle of connoisseurs, and the Brintaal Celtic Folk Festival reflects this very simple philosophy offering the audience the chance for a fascinating journey through places and times of the Celtic Lands thanks to a rich music programme and internationally renowned artists. The wide panorama of initiatives includes conventions, conferences, and a variety of cultural events dedicated to the culture of the ancient Celts and the northern folks, music concerts and dance shows under the stars, stages of folk music and dance, as well as craft markets, nature and historical guided walks and tours, exhibitions, displays of archery and experimental archeology, workshops for adults, leisure and educational activities for children, the excellent Irish cuisine, and, not least, the beautiful natural scenery of the Oliero Caves with the springs, the lake, the mountains and the trees all around.
