Tatai Patara 1597
Tata (Komárom-Esztergom county)

The geographical, cultural and historical context

The event takes place at Tata Castle situated on the banks of the picturesque Öreg (Old) Lake and the Eszterházy Palace. Not by chance for the many lakes interconnected by channels and the marshes, Tata became known as the "town of lakes". Tata, located in north-western Hungary, near Komárom, is rich in historical monuments, above all the Tata Castle built around the 14th century and achieving its blooming during the reign of Zsigmond Luxemburg and Mátyás Hunyadi, as the summer resort of the king. The walls of the castle reflect the marks of romantic style which is due to the Esterházy family used to live here. The Eszterházy Palace is a complex of buildings on the bank of the lake belonging to the Eszterházy family in the second half of the 18th century.

The Event

Tatai Patara 1597 is a military reenactment event restaging the most spectacular water and land battle scenes of the great siege of the Tata Castle. The reenactment features living history groups from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Belgium, Poland, Hungary and other European countries. The name of the event "Tatai Patara" is referred to an invention of "patara", or banger, a sort of petard used in war for creating noise and light. At the end of the 16th century, the Ottoman army pressed on Hungary after a long set of victories. Tata became a frontier fortress and a constant battleground, changing owners several times in this period. In a hard siege, on 23 May 1597, Count Miklós Pálffy thanks to patara managed to liberate the fortress from the Ottomans' hands.
All the phases of the siege are recreated, including attacks, moving of regiments, battering rams, single duels, battles on the lake and camp raids, portraying the savagery of contemporaneous warfare. Besides, the audience can also enjoy the faithful reconstruction of the daily life of civilians and soldiers in the historical camps, a real first-hand discovery of the period fashion, music, food and drinks.
