Napoleonic Days
Napoleonské dny
Chateau Austerlitz, Slavkov u Brna (South Moravian region)

The Event

Slavkov u Brna, historically known as Austerlitz, is a countrytown located about 20 km from Brno, in the South Moravian Region, famous for its charming hilly landscape and the excellent wine production, in Czech Republic. Slavkov is today worldwide famous for being the spot of the famous Battle of Austerlitz, which took place on December 2, 1805 AD, north of Vienna in the present-day Czech Republic, and saw the Grande Armée of France led by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte annihilating a much larger Austrian-Russian army. The Battle of Austerlitz is also known as the “Battle of the Three Emperors”, since it was the meeting of Napoleon’s army with the forces of Holy Roman Emperor Francis II and Russian Czar Alexander I, and is widely regarded as the greatest and most famous of Napoleon's victories, a real tactical masterpiece, that led him to a definitive victory: Austria had to surrender, the Russians were forced to retreat to the East, and the Holy Roman Empire ceased to exist with the Hapsburg dynasty losing the imperial crown and several German territories being separated from the Austrian influence by the creation of the Confederation of the Rhine. The Battle of Austerlitz, which represented the perfect end of the magnificent Napoleon's German military campaign, is perpetually printed in memory of local people and has become the source of the later Napoleonic tradition.

The Napoleonic Days is the traditional event of the Project Austerlitz and of the Central European Napoleonic Society organized since 2003 in Austerlitz, in Tvarozna and in Prace. Many activities concerning the battlefield take place in this period. They are focused on commemorations related to one of the most famous battlefields in Europe, with re-enactment moments around the important onsite erected building Peace Monument, Zuran memorial, the place of Napoleon's commanding post. Re-enactors in Napoleonic uniforms are performing demonstration of fighting, parades, training manoeuvres. A large military camp recreates common life of the soldiers when not participating in battles.
