Silves, Medieval Fair

Medieval Fair of Silves
Feira Medieval de Silves
11-20.08.2017
Silves (Algarve region)
PORTUGAL

The Event

The Medieval Fair of Silves is a national event re-enacting the historical events and the traditions from the past of the city. The event covers the period starting from 1053, when Silves became important thanks to Al-Mu’tadid, governor of Seville, and Ibn Ammar, the great Arab poet. Silves at that time was the centre of festivals, dance and poetry, and was populated by artists, poets, jurists, historians, scientists and wealthy merchants. In 1189 the city was conquered for two years by King Sancho I of Portugal, with the aid of Northern European crusaders, but lost it again to the Almohads. The town was finally taken from the last Muslim king Ibn Afan by Paio Peres Correia, Grand-Master of the Order of Santiago in 1242.

A great medieval fair is held every year in Silves, offering hundreds of stands and different products by traditions going to the past. The local tavernas serve the dishes of ancient cuisine, and the streets are filled with jugglers, storytellers, musicians, demonstrations of the medieval daily life scenes, trading, entertainment, law and punishment.
