The Event

Sale Marasino lies in a vast natural amphitheatre overlooking the eastern shore of Lake Iseo (a beautiful narrow lake sheltered by mountains and situated between the larger and more famous lakes Garda and Como), in Lombardia region, about 35 km from Brescia and 90 km from Milano. The town, surrounded by vineyards, and thick chestnut and olive groves, originated from the merging of two former villages: Sale, along the lake shore, grown during the Middle Ages thanks to the drainage of the marshy coast by the Benedictine Monks, and Marasino, atop a hill and already inhabited during the Ancient Rome Age.

Every year the medieval charm and atmosphere relive in the picturesque village of Maspiano, a hamlet of Sale Marasino, and along a stretch of the ancient “Valeriana” Route, carved halfway into the hill in a beautiful natural scenery with an amazing panorama over the lake and characterized today by cobbled streets and stonewalls still well preserved. During the Middle Ages the road, regularly travelled by merchants and pilgrims, linked the Franciacorta (a hilly area between Brescia city and the southern end of Lake Iseo, home to excellent wines) and Valle Camonica (one of the largest valleys of the central Alps, in eastern Lombardy, crossed by river Oglio and famous for the remarkable rock-carvings covering thousands of years, from prehistory to the Roman conquest). The audience will enjoy the chance of a deep insight into the 13th and 14th Centuries AD rural daily life through characters, objects and tools, rites and customs of the period. The programme includes historical camp, entertainment and workshops for adults and children, flag-throwing shows, archery and falconry displays, knights tournaments and joust, exhibitions, food stands with historical and local cuisine, the medieval murder mystery dinner with theatre actors helping the audience in revealing a murderous plot, and more the historical parade, the ancient Gregorian mass, the medieval crafts market, and finally in Maspiano, the reenactment of a medieval banquet at torch and candlelight served by historical characters and cheered by musicians and jugglers.
