Battle of Prestonpans, AD 1745
Prestonpans (East Lothian council area)

A spectacular weekend of top-class living history and battle re-enactment displays, bringing together some of the finest black-powder re-enactors in Britain. A time-travel back to the 18th century to relive the events of 1745 and breathe the atmosphere of the Jacobite rebellion in Scotland...

The Event

The Battle of Prestonpans was the first significant conflict in the second Jacobite Rising. The Jacobite army loyal to James Francis Edward Stuart and led by his son Charles Edward Stuart achieved a stunning victory over the redcoat army loyal to the Hanoverian George II, led by Sir John Cope. It was initially known as the Battle of Gladsmuir but was fought at Prestonpans. The victory was a huge morale boost for the Jacobites, and a heavily mythologized version of the story entered art and legend. The overall message then as today was one of Hope and Ambition in the breast of a young man and his followers.

Every year, to mark the anniversary of the 1745 Battle of Prestonpans great celebrations and reenactments are organized in Cuthill Park in Prestonpans. The town is located to the east of Edinburgh and, besides being the site of the 1745 Battle, boasts some impressive examples of historical architecture of different periods, from the 11th century. During the event, reenactors set up their historical camps, preparing to the great battle reenactment and offering displays that illustrate military life of the period. Engaging activities are designed for children and adults, allowing everyone to experience the history and moreover make its part.
