Pontremoli (Toscana region)

The Event

Pontremoli, known as the "City of Books" due to its great tradition of booksellers and the famous annual book festival (“Premio Bancarella”), is located in the upper valley of river Magra at the foot of Apennines, in northern Tuscany's Lunigiana region, between Liguria and Emilia-Romagna, at about 40 km from La Spezia, in Liguria, and 90 km from Parma in Emilia Romagna. The town, with well-preserved medieval streets, several churches and buildings of past noble families, in the Middle Ages was an important milestone along the "Via Francigena" (the Frankish route, ie from the Land of the Franks, from Canterbury to Rome across England, France, Switzerland and Italy, as well as one of the three main pilgrimage routes with the ones leading to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and Jerusalem in the Holy Land).

Every August, the Piagnaro castle, one of the largest castles of Lunigiana, and the nearby streets become the setting for the reenactment of the arrival in Pontremoli in 1226 of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II who granted the town the status of free municipality. Many historical characters dressed in period costumes, musicians, merchants and artisans enliven the evenings and animate the colorful medieval market and the spectacular historical parades, while flag-wavers are performing and knights are dueling in the military camp. The event ends with the town districts challenging to conquer the victory in the exciting Saracen tournament and the ceremony of the delivery of the prize, the Palio, with magical fireworks.
