The Festival of the Late Antiquity offers the unique opportunity to get to know the ancient Romans from the late Empire first-hand experiencing the event through interactive and live-in activities and in an accurate way far from the usual stereotypes about the Ancient Rome…

The Event

Petronell-Carnuntum is located on the right bank of the Danube River, halfway between Vienna and Bratislava, in Lower Austria state, and is home to the "Archaeological Park Carnuntum", extending over the area of 10 km² between the villages of Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, and witnessing the splendour of the ancient roman city of Carnuntum. Originally founded by Emperor Tiberius in 6 AD as a fortified winter camp of the Roman legionaries on the Danube in the Noricum province, Canuntum became soon an important metropolis and trade centre at a crossing point of important routes within the Roman Empire, as well as the capital of the Pannonia Superior province, with about 50,000 people.

The Archaeological Park Carnuntum features the major types of Roman architectures which have been faithfully reconstructed, down to the last detail, to illustrate the life of 2000 years ago, including a citizen’s house, a splendid mansion and public baths. The reconstructions are not just fictitious sets or museum settings, but functional buildings that can actually be lived in. The world of gladiators can be experienced in two well preserved large amphitheatres, while in the Museum Carnuntinum are on display some of the finest archaeological findings from the area.

In August the Archaeological Park is home to a brand new historical event, “Carnuntum 333. Festival of the late Antiquity”, providing a new chance of time travelling, this time back to the late Roman Empire. About hundred ancient Roman reenactors from all over Europe will interact with the visitors in the historical camp, the reconstructed buildings and the open spaces of the Archaeological Park to illustrate the daily military and civil life at the time of Emperor Constantine the Great (272-337 AD), while introducing a wealth of historical characters, such as legionaries, senior officials, civilians, craftsmen, musicians, German barbarians and many more. It is the year 333 AD and Constantine rules over the whole Roman Empire which is experiencing a new period of splendour, although the Great Migration starts raising its threatening shadows over the next future. In Carnuntum, the Roman governor administrates the province, organizes the life and activity of the Goths’ settlement, Rome’s new allies, receives new military reinforcements from other provinces of the Empire, and tries to deal with the growing religious tensions between the old cults and the new Christian religion that is quickly spreading throughout the Empire after Constantine signed the Edict of Milan in 313 AD, proclaiming the religious tolerance for Christians and ending a long and brutal period of persecution. The visitors have the chance to follow and take actively part at accurately researched and restaged scenes from the daily life of the late Roman Empire, including betrothal and wedding ceremonies, hunting games, business and law administration, trade and craft, military parades, recruitment and training, legionaries’ drills and manoeuvres, sumptuous feasts and banquets, as well as the social interaction in baths and taverns, and much more…
