History, traditions, cuisine, daily life of ancient Rome animate the fascinating setting of a beautiful town in the Marche region of Central Italy to relive the enduring charm and culture of the Ancient Rome...

Geographical, cultural and historical context

Osimo (the ancient Vetus Auximum) is a town situated atop a hill near the Adriatic Sea, about 15 km from Ancona, in Marche region. Vetus Auximum was founded by the Greek colonists of Ancona, and later contended by the Gauls and the ancient Piceni, until conquered by the Romans, who used it as a fortress for their northern Picenum settlement starting from 174 BC. Osimo played then a leading role in the historical events of the Piceno area and the middle Adriatic. A significant episode of the local history took place in year 49 BC, right after Julius Caesar (100-44 BC, Roman statesman, general, and author) returning from his successful Gaul campaign decided to cross the River Rubicone, the then frontier boundary of Roman Italy, with his legions. This step of entering Italy under arms in defiance of the rules inevitably led to the Great Roman Civil War (49-45 BC) against the Senate and Pompey. Auximum, a stronghold of Pompey Pompey (106-48 BC, a military and political leader), offered Caesar the keys of the city in order to avoid a useless bloodbath.

Event description and programme
