 Geographical, cultural and historical context

Oderzo is a medieval and renaissance town located in the very heart of the Venetian plain along the Monticano River, in a fertile and rich in vineyards territory, about 30 km from Treviso and 66 km from Venice, in Veneto region. Oderzo has always been a strategically important crossroad thanks to its location ideal for trade. And in fact the Latin name Opitergium is supposed to stem from "Terg", an ancient Venetic root word indicating a market. The foundation of the town dates back to the Iron Age and the first settlement of the Venetic tribes in the area around the 10th Century B.C. Oderzo was gradually Romanised and granted also the status of Municipium in 48 BC, thus experiencing a great economic, cultural and architectural development. The town reached its peak and about 50.000 inhabitants in the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD as witnessed still today by the many archaeological ruins witness still today its great past.
