Geographical, cultural and historical context

Obidos is a town located in the Oeste Subregion, in the historical province of Estremadura. Obidos was originally a fortified Roman settlement, becoming a military stronghold under the Arabs, reconquested by the Christians in 1148. The Castle and city walls were repeatedly repaired and expanded over the years.


Event description and programme

Each July Óbidos Castle hosts a traditional Medieval Market. For two weeks the castle and the town recreate the spirit of medieval Europe. Hundreds of entertainers and stall holders accurately dressed as merchants, jugglers, jesters, wandering minstrels, soldiers enliven the streets. Visitors can visit a traditional crafts fair and watch various representations of street minstrels, ancient games and music, duels, skirmishes and tournaments of knights, up to the most dramatic episodes of war and pestilence, which encouraged superstitions, prayers and incantations. Dozens of taverns and stalls are scattered aroung the city, completing the medieval atmosphere with traditional food and drinks by ancient recipes.
