Narva, Battle AD 1704

History Festival “Narva Battle“, AD 1704
Ajaloo Festival Narva Lahing
Narva (Ida-Viru county)

The Event

Narva is the third largest city in Estonia, located by the Russian border, on the Narva River which drains Lake Peipus. The early settlement existed in the area from the 5-4th millennium BC, giving origin to the Narva culture - a European Neolithic archaeological culture, characterized by the technology of hunter-gatherers. In the 13th century the Narva castle was founded, and a medieval city was developed around it. In the period between 16th and 19th centuries Narva was target in the wars between Sweden and Russia. The first Battle of Narva, one of the encounters in the Great Northern War, took place in 1700. During the battle, a Swedish relief army under Charles XII of Sweden defeated a Russian siege forces of Peter I. The second Battle of Narva represented the following Russian siege of the city in 1704, resulting in Russian’s victory this time.

Each summer the international festival is held in Narva, commemorating the events of the Narva Battle of 1704 and attracting many reenactors from military-historical clubs of the Northern Europe. In the military camp the visitors can meet soldiers in uniforms of the times of Peter I and Charles XII. Next to the military camp there is a civil camp where reenactors illustrate everyday life of the common people. In the Northern Yard of the Narva Museum the period fair is open, offering nice goods, crafts demonstrations and workshops. The highlight of the event is the great reenactment of the Battle of Narva.
