Montferrand, Medieval Festival

Medieval Festival of Dauphin of Auvergne at Montferrand
Fêtes Médiévales de Dauphin d'Auvergne à Montferrand
Montferrand, Clermont-Ferrand (Auvergne region)

The Event

Montferrand is a former town, now a district of the modern Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne. It was the rival of Clermont for many centuries until their union in 1630-1731. Wishing to regain independence, Montferrand asked for it several times in the 18-19th centuries.

he annual Medieval Festival held in Montferrand is dedicated to the Dauphins of Auvergne, the rulers of that region in the Middle Ages. The citizens and rulers of the ancient city animate the streets, inviting the audience to step back into the medieval past of the place. Various board games typical of that period are represented: dice, cards, as well as chess coming from India through Muslim Spain. Nobles attend knights’ tournaments, jousting, go hunting. Like every year since 1996, the city plunges into its past and enjoys the sound of trumpets, flutes, hurdy... then the walls resound with the clatter of horses' hooves, clashing swords, warriors shouting at fight. In the streets artisans teach ancestral know-how, while jugglers, dancers, fire eaters, troubadours and storytellers are inviting to the ancient world of entertainment.
