The Event

The event takes place in Mikulov a beautiful town in the Czech Republic located about 215 km from Prague and 50 km from Brno along the border with Austria (Vienna is about 90km away), in South Moravia, a hilly region known as the Garden of Europe, rich in vineyards, ancient castles, hospitable people and excellent wine thanks to a very favorable climate. Mikulov heritage includes the Dietrichstein Castle (from the name of a bohemian-austrian noble family), the Piarist College, the old Jewish Quarter and several other historical buildings and churches. Mikulov history is deeply connected to the 1805 and 1809 Napoleon campaigns against Austria, the first ended with the Battle of Austerlitz, while the second with the ones of Wagram and Znojmo.

The Austrian Empire, severely affected by the conditions of the Bratislava Peace Treaty following Napoleon’s First Austrian Campaign in year 1805, tried to recover its supremacy, but after the not decisive victorious battle of Aspern-Essling, the Austrian were clearly and brilliantly defetead by Napoleon at Wagram and forced to retreat being chased by the French. During the retreat several skirmishes occurred in the surroundings of Mikulov between the French avant-garde and the Austrian rear-guard. The final battle took place in Znojmo but was soon stopped by the news of the armistice which made Austria to become a forced ally to France as confirmed in year 1810 by the marriage of Napoleon and Marie Louise, daughter to Emperor Franz. And so every year in spring Mikulov becomes the ideal set for the great historical event organized by Project Austerlitz and C.E.N.S. (Central Europe Napoleonic Society) to commemorate the 1809 Napoleonic Campaign and the end of the war in South Moravia. The audience will experience the civil and military daily life in the Napoleonic Age thanks to the historical camps faithfully reconstructed in the castle park with hundreds of reenactors from all over Europe practicing military maneuvers and drills. The programme includes as well military parades bands and drummers performances, ceremonies at the "french cemetery" and at the Dietrichstein Grave (where rests Franz-Joseph, Prince of Dietrichstein, active in the Napoleonic wars), and the great battle reenactment in Mikulov old town.
