05,06.05.2018 (to be confirmed)

Two days of Living History and Culture to relive Malta’s glorious late medieval period, 1200-1500 AD thanks to several historical groups reenacting battle scenes and interpreting living displays all over the beautiful Maltese town...

The Event

Mdina, a fortified medieval town and once also the old capital of Malta island, is located in a strategic position, on the island’s highest point, far away from the sea. The history of Mdina traces back more than 4000 years as witnessed by several archaeological findings, while the today town was founded with name Maleth or Meleth around 700 BC by Phoenician settlers, and later renamed Melite by the Romans. According to tradition it was here that in 60 A.D. that the Apostle St. Paul is said to have lived after being shipwrecked on the Islands. The present-day Mdina name derives from the Arabic word “medina” (meaning a distinct city quarter, often walled, in many North African regions). The town remained the capital of Malta from Antiquity throughout the Middle Ages until the arrival of the Order of St. John in 1530, when Birgu became the administrative centre of the island. Mdina experienced then a period of gradual decline, and despite remaining the centre of the Maltese nobility and religious authorities, it never regained its former importance. Mdina is today a beloved and fascinating travel destination thanks to its timeless atmosphere as well as its cultural and religious treasures with impressive medieval and baroque architectures lining its narrow, shady streets and alleyways.

Every year in May Mdina hosts a spectacular medieval festival, during which the city is brought back to its medieval past. The whole city centre is decorated by flowers and plants covering walls, squares, gates, balconies and even the bridge of Vilhena Gate. Visitors are able to experience thrilling jousting tournaments, displays of breathtaking birds of prey, medieval football competitions and human chess challenges. Medieval knights, interactive games, colourful characters, demonstrations on the use of medieval weaponry and armour liven the streets, together with displays of costumes, a falconry demonstration, exhibitions, lectures on facts related to Medieval Mdina and guided tours to the sites of interest. The big artisans' market and traditional medieval food served in many places around the city complete the atmosphere of the event, while medieval fun is assured by plays and performances by minstrels and jugglers.
