The Event

The Museum of the Dark Ages is a site museum devoted to the Early Middle Ages and to the Merovingian period. It is installed in an old watermill near the river Serre, in Marle, Aisne department in Picardy, and is open to the public since 1991. The sites include the reconstructed Merovingian farm, the Frankish village, the archaeological garden of the Merovingian period, the enclosures of animals, the shows area and the reconstructed Merovingian necropolis.

The Merovingian Days are held in the museum several times a year, allowing through various activities and demonstrations in period costume give an idea of daily life in rural Middle Ages. Vegetable dye, basketry, ironwork, spinning, weaving, pottery, stone cutting and other daily activities and crafts are offered for learning and trying. The village fair, with animals of the barnyard, recreate the atmosphere of a farm of the 6-7th centuries. Demonstrations of ax-throwing and archery are also available to the public.
