The anniversary of the Battle of Marathon that took place more than 2500 years ago is celebrated every year at the Marathon site in Greece, to remember the victory of the Greek alliance against the invading Persian Empire. The battle took place in 490 BC, marking the main episode of the first Persian invasion of Greece. The numerous Persian army, led by King Darius I, aimed to defeat the Greek armies commanded by Athens and Plataea, and to subjugate the whole Greece.

Each year people commemorate this world famous battle, as it assured the survival of Athenian democracy against the autocracy of the Persian Empire and marked the rise of Greece as a major cultural power, thus paving the way to the wide spreading of the classical culture, with its way of thinking, philosophy, arts, which more than any other deeply influenced the western civilization. Hundreds of re-enactors from around the world participate in the event, including Greeks and Iranians, groups from all Europe, North America and Australia. The reenactment of the Battle is focused on both military actions of the ancient Greek and Persian armies placed in the historic camp and the ceremonies held at the Tomb of the Athenians, the Tomb of the Plataeans and the Acropolis in Athens. The program of over three days offers educational and entertainment activities, like dances, literature, crafts and culture of Greece and Persia in the Archaic period.
