Event description and programme

The Feast of Fools, is one of the names given to popular medieval festivals regularly celebrated by the clergy and laity from the fifth century until the sixteenth century in several countries of Europe.

The ancient tradition is celebrated in the town of Machecoul located in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France. One of the main attractions of the town are the ruins of the Castle of Gilles de Rais, dating back to the 13th century and once owned by the infamous child-murderer, baron Gilles de Rais (1404–1440), who possibly inspired the author of the famous fairy tale “Bluebeard”.

For several days "Dressed Fools" invade downtown of Machecoul and the surroundings of the Castle, offering a spectacular recreation of the atmosphere of the Middle Ages and old traditions. The rich programme of the Feast of Fools includes various street animations, Masked Fools parade, chivalry and tournaments displays, while in the evening the visitors experience the great banquet and various entertainment shows.
