The Event

Lyon is a city located at the confluence of the Rhone and the Saone rivers, between the Jura Mountains (a sub-alpine mountain range separating the Rhine and Rhone rivers), the Alps and the Massif Central (an elevated region consisting of mountains and plateaux), about 470 km from Paris and 320 km from Marseille, in the Rhône-Alpes region, in France. Lyon was historically famous thanks to the outstanding silk production and weaving and for being home of the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis, who invented the cinematographe. Today the city is worldwide known as the French capital of gastronomy and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its remarkable historical and architectural heritage. Lyon was founded in 43 BC as a Roman colony on the site of a Gaulish settlement and became soon a prosperous communications hub and the capital of Gaul by name Lugdunum. During the Renaissance the city experienced a great cultural and economical development reaching its maximum splendour and rivaling even with Paris thanks to its geographical position, the land and river trade, the silk industry and the banking business.

The Renaissance golden age of Lyon under the reign of François I from the House of Valois (1494-1537) relives every year in springtime through a great historical event featuring many leisure and cultural initiatives as well as hundreds of historical characters in accurate period dresses and Reenactors coming from all over Europe. Set of the event is the beautiful Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon), the famous Medieval and Renaissance district at the foot of the Fourvière hill, which is the oldest in the city as well as one of Europe’s most extensive Renaissance neighborhoods. The extensive programme includes exhibitions, conferences and lectures, historical parade, the "village of the ancient arts and crafts" with the market and crafts demonstrations offered by many craftsmen, living history displays illustrating the military and civil daily life of the period, street theatre and entertainment, period food and drinks to be tasted in the ancient taverns, battle reenactments, dance and music shows and the great Renaissance Ball.
