Bøstad, Lofoten islands (Nordland county)
NORWAY

The Event

The Lofotr Viking Museum is a historical museum based on the archaeological excavation and reconstruction of a Viking chieftain's village, located in the hamlet of Borg, near Bøstad, Vestvågøy, in the North Norwegian archipelago of Lofoten. Excavations shows that it was established around 500 AD. The ground plan, the room partitions, the location of poles and fire places, the wooden walls and outer walls made of grass turf could all be reconstructed in accordance with the excavated structures. In the area there are also vestiges of boat houses for long-boats, circular tunnel systems, barrows, and vestiges of other long-houses. Added together, these remains indicate that there was a concentration of power in the area during the Iron Age.

The annual Lofotr Viking Festival offers the unique experience based on living history from the early Iron Age. The museum's surroundings and buildings provide an outstanding setting for the festival. Activities and animations designed all ages and interests, and the visitors can watch theater, learn about the Norse gods and supernatural beings, participate in craft activities, compete in historical sports, see the Viking warriors training for combat, row the Viking ship, experience magician’s tricks, listen to lectures and experience trading at the market.
