The Event

The Fröja Thing is a Viking market which is held every summer at the Vikinga Tider, “The Viking Times”, an archaeological open-air museum under construction in Löddeköpinge, Skåne county, in southern Sweden, and aimed to provide a faithful reconstruction of a Viking landscape with houses, farms, animals and daily life a thousand years ago (to find out more about the site please visit our dedicated page: Vikinga Tider).

Viking merchants and craftsmen from all over Europe will people the traditional Viking market to show and sell all sorts of Viking artisanry, from exquisite jewellery to handmade goods. The visitors will have the unique opportunity to take part at several workshops, including, among the others, brewing beer in Viking-style, producing salt from seaweed, casting silver and other metals, forging weapons and armours, making and decorating ceramics etc. The visitors will meet several historical characters dressed in faithful Viking Age costumes, like musicians, jesters and other artists, warriors, traders and many others, or dress themselves as Vikings for an even more immersive experience. The Vikingafestival provides a rich programme, including story-telling, traditional and historical cuisine, battle reenactment, children workshops and games, pony rides, and much more, really offering a weekend of time travelling with a wealth of leisure and educational activities for the whole family.

Finally, special guest is the Sweden-Mongolia Foundation, a non-profit organization, founded by the Mongols who live and study in Sweden and Swedes who are interested in Mongolia. The members of the organization will set up a small Mongolian nomad camp, thus helping the visitors to get acquainted with the history and the heritage of the Mongols. It is likely that the Norsemen, during their travels in the East, met the nomadic people and even went so far as to Mongolia in central Asia. So, during the Viking Festival, the visitors will have also the chance to visit the typical Mongolian yurt (a portable, bent dwelling structure covered by layers of fabric and sheep's woolfelt, and traditionally used by nomads in Central Asiat steppes as home), or wear Mongolian folk costumes, listen to traditional Mongolian instruments and throat singing, admire the Mongolian wrestlers and archers, and of course also taste the traditional Mongolian food.
