Traquair Medieval Fayre
Innerleithen, Tweeddal (Scottish Borders council)

a superb weekend that will transport you back to ancient times Jousting, a Medieval Tournament, falconry, archery, equestrian displays, living history, early music, jesters and children’s entertainment in one of Scotland's oldest homes ...

The Event

The Traquair Medieval Fayre is a truly authentic historical event that will capture adults and childrens’ imagination of life in medieval times. The event is held in the Traquair House, situated in approximately 8 km southeast of Peebles. Traquair House is considered the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland. While not strictly a castle, it is built in the style of a fortified mansion, predating the Scottish Baronial style of architecture. It is built on the site of a hunting seat used by the Scottish kings from the 12th century, though no part of the present building can be dated with certainty before the 15th century.

The event offers an exciting programme of entertainment. The knights' contest to be the king’s champion in an impressive combat display will be held in front of the House. On the avenue a stunning medieval equestrian display takes place, as well as some firing demonstrations with an ancient canon. The ancient sport of falconry and living history demonstrations are held, including armoury, medicinal remedies, traditional crafts and trade, and the visitors are involved in various activities such as long bow archery. For children there is a great sword and shield making workshop, a chance to dress up, shows of magic and medieval face painting. The atmosphere is enhanced by the wandering minstrels and an early music choir.
