The Event

Hämeenlinna is a city and municipality in the heart of the historical province of Häme in the south of Finland and is the birthplace of composer Jean Sibelius. Today, it belongs to the region of Tavastia Proper, and is famous for its medieval royal Häme Castle. The Castle is located on the coast of lake Vanajavesi in the city center, which was originally an island, and is traditionally believed to have been built at the end of the 13th century following the legendary Second Swedish Crusade.

Häme Castle Medieval Society organizes each year the second biggest medieval festival in Finland, involving about 200 reenactors volunteers. More than 19000 visitors take part in various events of the Häme Medieval Fair. Artisans and craft workshops, knights and tournaments, various contests and shows, medieval music and entertainment are examples of the activities included in the programme.
