Geographical, cultural and historical context

Gourdon is a small town in the Lot department of south-western France, located on the top of a hill overlooking the right bank of the Bléou river with magnificent panoramic views over the natural region Bouriane a sandy and hilly area covered with forests of chestnut trees which extends up to the Dordogne River and neighbours the Périgord.

Gourdon has a rich prehistoric past as witnessed by the high concentration of prehistoric sites such as the famous Caves of Cougnac with its outstanding wall paintings. The town flourished during the Middle Ages and still now keeps intact its medieval features with its fortified gate, half-timbered houses, narrow lanes twisting up to the esplanade where once the castle stood. The rich local heritage includes also the Maison du Sénéchal, which houses exhibitions of craft products in summer, the 17th century Town Hall, the church of Saint-Pierre, the Maison Cavaignac, and the jardins thématiques (themed gardens) in the medieval quarter of the town.

Event description and programme

The annual Medieval Festival is organized in the heart of Gourdon, bringing it back into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages for some days. The streets of the historical centre are transformed into a medieval town of more than 500 years ago, and the festival attracts more than 5000 visitors every year. Knights and ladies, jugglers, buffoons and troubadours stride along the streets, where a market of creative craftsmen is settled down, providing a lively and vivid atmosphere.

The Festival invites the spectators of all ages to get involved into the world of the Middle Ages, experience, listen and discover the city in an exciting journey back to its past. This Festival also involves the visitors' senses: the colours of costumes, the numerous local specialities of the medieval banquet, the songs of the troubadours. All this for the pleasure of the visitors who decide to spend a weekend discovering the charming perched village.
