05-12.08.2018
Visby (Gotland county)
SWEDEN

1 week, 500 events and 40,000 visitors. The Medieval Week is a paradise for all who like jousting, markets, church concerts, street theater, fire shows, storytelling, walks, lectures and more. The festival runs in Visby's medieval fairytale environments, as well as in rural Gotland...

Geographical, cultural and historical context

Gotland, Sweden’s largest island, lies right in the middle of the Baltic. The island’s biggest city, Visby, boasts one of the best preserved medieval ramparts anywhere in the world and is included in UNESCO’s world heritage list since 1995.

Event description and programme

During eight days in August the Middle Age is back on Gotland. Visby’s 200 medieval houses on winding lanes, splendid church ruins, and the magnificent city walls frame a unique spectacle – the medieval Week on Gotland. Celebrated for over 25 years, the festival engages tens of thousands local visitors and travellers, representing the largest and most famous event on Gotland. The Medieval Week offers events and activities involving the visitors of all ages: markets and music, theatre and lectures, knight tournaments, exciting spectacle and shows. Smells, colours, sounds, tastes and movements of the past fill the atmosphere. Local professionals and merry amateurs recreate the tales of medieval Gotland in plays, jesting, parades and improvisations on streets and squares.

Reenactment of the Battle of Visby, AD 1361: a Danish army, consisting of knights and professional soldiers invaded Gotland, and the peasants of the island gathered to resist the invaders. Thousands of them were slain. The project Battle of Visby honored the fallen and their sacrifice for freedom by reenacting the battle and putting up a big military camp outside the walls of Visby.
