Golfe-Juan, Napoleon

Napoleon in Golfe Juan
Napoleon à Golfe-Juan
Golfe Juan, Vallauris (Provence-Alpes Maritimes-Cote d'Azur region)

a huge re-enactment of Napoleon's landing, a highly original spectacle to breathe again the imperial flavour and relive the exciting atmosphere leading to the famous Hundred Days, the period between Napoleon's return from exile on the island of Elba and the second restoration of King Louis XVIII on 8 July 1815 following the Battle of Waterloo...

Geographical, cultural and historical context

The event takes place in Golfe Juan, a picturesque and charming fishing village, which belongs to the Vallauris municipality and is located on a scenic hilltop in the middle of a large natural bay stretching from Cap d'Antibes to Cap de la Croisette, between Antibes and Cannes, about 25km from Nice, in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region. Golfe Juan is historically famous for the production of ceramics, and today a renowned seaside resort thanks to its Mediterranean climate, and the beautiful sandy beaches and marinas. Its origins are lost in the mists of time, probably dating back to a fortified village of Celtic-Ligurian tribes which settled in the area around the 3rd century BC. The quayside of Golfe-Juan was once just a natural mooring spot with a few fishermen’s cabins and pottery storage sheds, and a meeting-place for merchants, traders, mule-owners, but on March 1st, 1815, Golfe-Juan took its place in History: Napoleon landed there with 600 men, having escaped exile on the island of Elba.
