Gergovie, Arverniales

Les Arverniales
Gergovie (Auvergne region)

The Event

Gergovie is a village in the commune of La Roche-Blanche, a few kilometres south of Clermont-Ferrand, in France. It is situated at the foot of the Gergovie plateau, the official but disputed site of the Battle of Gergovia, where the Arverni and other Gallic tribes gathered under Vercingetorix's command to fight the Roman legions of Julius Caesar in 52 BC.

Organized each summer in Gergovie, the Arverniales is a Gallic Archeo Festival which portrays the Gallic and Roman civilizations of the first century BC. The two days of the Festival include various animations and activities balancing the recreational, festive and educational aspects. The event involves more than 200 reenactors and volunteers and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Reenactors provide a framework for the presentation of the military and civilian life through camps and special displays. Various ancient crafts are represented by the artisans: manufacture of oil lamps and coins, work with textiles and leather, ceramics, metal crafts, weapons. The performances include ancient dances, fights, horse shows and special animations for children.
