Gabreta, Beltane Celtic Fest.

Gabreta Celtic Village, Freyung-Grafenau (Bayern state)

The Event

The archaeological themed park Gabreta, the name (probably of greek origins) of the Bavarian/Bohemian forest mountains in ancient times, is located in the municipality of Ringelai (also known as the "Meran of the Bavarian Forest" because of its good climatic conditions), in a valley surrounded by mountains, in Bavaria region in Germany. Thanks to six historical reconstructed houses the world of the ancient Celts can be vividly illustrated and practically experienced. Families can actively take part in the works and daily life of a Celtic Village constructing new houses or trying ancient craft techniques, like weaving, baking, pottery, forging, grinding grain, brewing, bread baking, sowing, harvesting, and animal breeding.

The archaeological park is also celebrating the three major Celtic festivals thanks to many reenactors coming from all over Europe. The event is plenty of entertainment for children and adults in a wonderful enchanting landscape: Celtic music and cuisine, pony rides, archery stages, guided tours at the Celtic village, deep insights into the daily life of the ancient Celts, experimental archaeology, and finally the celebration of the sacred feast of Beltane, associated to the God Belenus. Beltane is the festival of spring and rebirth of nature, marking the beginning of the pastoral summer season as well as of the "brighter half" of the year and the end of the "darker half”, a time when the border between this world and the otherworld becomes thinner.
