Geographical, cultural and historical context

Finale Emilia, an ancient water town once called the "Little Venice" of the Estensi (from the name of the princely dynasty which ruled the city of Ferrara from 1240 to 1598 playing an important role in Italian diplomacy and warfare), is located on the banks of the river Panaro, about 40 km from Modena and 40 km from Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna region. After the very first settlements dating back to the Bronze Age, Finale became a Roman colony, and later during the Middle Ages a borderland stronghold controlling the river trade quickly developing thanks to the wool, leather and glass manufactures. The main sights today include the Este Castle, the Town Hall, the St Bartholomew's Church, the Clock Tower, the Theatre and the Jewish Cemetery.

Event description and programme

Every year a great festival is held to commemorate the events of the year 1521, when Duke Alfonso I Este managed to defeat the allied Spanish and Papal troops taking back Finale after ten years under the Pope dominion. Unfortunately, the celebrations for the new-found freedom were not lasting long, since in a few days Finale was besieged again and soon reconquered by the Pope army. The civil and military daily life during the Renaissance Age relives now through armours, kitchens and artillery positions faithfully reconstructed in the castle, while the old town host the military camps and several tableaux vivants featuring many historical characters. The rich programme includes crafts markets, falconry and flag-throwing shows, fencing and artillery displays, military training and manoeuvres, historical parades, music concerts, puppet shows, entertainment with minstrels, jugglers, acrobats, fire-eaters, as well as exhibitions and lectures, educational workshops, various entertainment shows, excellent cuisine in the historical taverns, and finally the Great Artistic Palio.
