Kampen (Overijssel province)
NETHERLANDS

The Event

The medieval Hanseatic League, called also Hansa (or Hanse), was a one of the first kind of economic alliance of trading cities and their merchant guilds that dominated trade along the coast of Northern Europe. It stretched from the Baltic to the North Sea and inland during the Late Middle Ages and early modern period (13th–17th centuries).

DIE HANSE is an active network of towns and cities that historically belonged to the Hanseatic League, or had lively trading exchanges with it. The new HANSE was founded in 1980 in the Dutch town of Zwolle and since then it has become the world's largest voluntary association of towns and cities.

In the old days, at the time of the medieval Hanseatic League, the member towns and cities met on a “Hanse Day” in order to agree on joint action. The new HANSE has revived this tradition through "International Hanseatic Days". Every year a different Hanseatic city plays host, enabling members to exchange ideas and experience, make acquaintances and celebrate.

The Festival hosts delegations from all the cities of Hanseatic Union that take part in the parade and hoist the Hanseatic banner. Afterwards the guests from Hanseatic Union represent their cities in the pavilions of the Hanseatic Fair. The Festival is aimed to present the historical Hanseatic League involving the visitors in various activities and experiences of the Middle Ages and traditions of the city which hosts "Hanseatic Day".
