Geographical, cultural and historical context

Colmars-les-Alpes is a charming village located in an amazing wooded mountain landscape at the confluence of the Verdon and Lance rivers, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of southeastern France. The name of the village comes from a hill dedicated to Mars by the Romans ("Collo Marto"). Characterized by small lanes, beautiful old houses, roofs of larch shingles, streets paved with Verdon pebbles, pretty little squares with fountains, Colmars boasts also a remarkable military heritage. In the middle Ages, Colmars was a prosperous community with a municipal franchise and a flourishing drapery industry, and already at the end of the 14th century became a frontier village with the Duke of Savoy's territory in Italy. Following numerous wars and fires, Colmars was gradually reinforced over the centuries turning into a keystone of the French defence system. Today the territory of Colmars is recognized as a site of special natural, scientific or historical interest.

Event description and programme

The town relives its medieval past during the annual celebration of the time of lords and ladies – the Medieval Festival. The streets are crowded, and the visitors meet lords and peasants, ruffians and whores. Colmars lives two days of the rhythm of tambourines, flutes and bagpipes. Jugglers, stilt walkers, knights, acrobats and other performers are involved in the spectacular shows. The visitors join medieval dances and play old games. At the medieval market, the artisans explain their work and offer crafts workshops, while the warriors at the military camps demonstrate their weapons.
