Event description and programme

The Cantabrian Wars occured in the years 29-19 BC, starting with the Great War of 27-25 BC, when Caesar Augustus fought to subdue the Cantabri, the only Celtic people in Iberia who withstood the domination of Rome.

The annual event dedicated to the Cantabrian Wars takes place in the valley of Buelna, where numerous archaeological traces of the Roman and Celto-Iberian past are to be found. During two weekends the historical events are reenacted through living history displays with Romans and Cantabri, organized in sessions. The Roman events include the opening of the Temple of Janus, the arrival of the emperor Octavian Augustus, the debate in the Senate, scenes of military life, athletics and gladiator games, while the Cantabrian sessions illustrate religious rites, funerals, weddings and oracles. Finally, the final battle and the Roman victory are reenacted by historical groups.

Please contact the Organizers for confirmation and further details.
