A weekend in Brescello, the famous set of the “Peppone and Don Camillo” film series based on the books by Giovannino Guareschi, to celebrate and reenact the time and the events linking the town to the Roman Emperor Otho (32-69 AD): living history displays, interactive workshops and live-in activities to experience the daily life in Ancient Rome

The Event

The event takes place in Brescello located in the river Po Valley near its confluence with the Enza river, in region Emilia-Romagna, about 80 km from Bologna and 25 km from Reggio Emilia, and probably best known for having been the set for one of Italy's most loved film series “Don Camillo” adapted from the novels of Giovanni Guareschi. But the town is also the world's leading exporter of wooden train whistles and has very ancient origins, being founded by the celtic tribe of the Galli Cenomani. Around 190-186 BC Brescello became a Roman colony by name Brixellum gaining soon a great strategic and economical importance.

Every year in June Brescello hosts the “Brixellum Romanorum”, a major Italian historical reenactment organized by the local archaeological group and featuring every year a different theme related to the history of the Roman Civilization and the meeting with the Celtic one. The glories of Ancient Rome relive through the reconstruction of historical camps where to learn and experience the daily life of the legionaries, gladiator fights, cavalry displays, experimental archaeology workshops (like bronze casting, textiles weaving and dyeing, ancient cosmetics, pottery, mosaics and jewellery making). The rich programme includes as well lectures, historical parades, harps concerts, documentaries and movies, books presentations, educational moments for schools, guided tours at the local Museum of Archaeology, food stands where to taste historical and typical dishes of local tradition, and, finally, the reconstruction of an open field battle between Romans and Celts. Very impressive is also the Roman banquet presenting dishes from the ancient Roman cuisine in a charming atmosphere with several period animations like gladiator fights, dance, music and theatre performances and ancient roman ceremonies and rites.
