Geographical, cultural and historical context

Brașov is a town located in a plain surrounded by the Southern Carpathians, in the Transylvania region of central Romania, at about 160 km from the capital Bucharest and 380 km from the Black Sea. The city was once for being an important centre of Transylvanian Saxons in the past (the city was long known with its German name, Kronstadt, meaning Crown City), and a large commercial hub on the trade roads between East and West. Brasov was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211 on an ancient Dacian site and settled by the Saxons as one of the seven walled citadels of Transylvania region. Brasov boasts a quite remarkable heritage thanks to its gothic, baroque and renaissance architectures, as well as a wealth of historical attractions, being one of the most visited places in Romania. The city provides also an ideal backdrop for period films thanks to its distinct and well-preserved medieval ambiance.

Event description and programme

The event makes part of a circuit of tournaments involving for four weekends the cities of Brasov, Bran, Faragas and Rasnov. Four knights must challenge in order to win the hand of the beautiful princess, while the public has to cheer and vote for its favourite knight. Brasov, the most important city of the fortress group, is invaded by people dressed in medieval costume, parades of knights and courtiers, princesses, witches, clowns and executioners. Shows with swords and archery, duels and battles between knights, tournaments on horseback are held twice a day. A historical market is set up, where craftsmen perform the activities live and offer stages of hand-working and calligraphy. Children can participate in medieval games and taste traditional sweets, and the medieval food is prepared along the streets or at the banquet of the Knights. The city is animated by the troubadours and street artists, with medieval music concerts and dance courses.
