The Event

The event takes place in Birgu, an ancient town in Malta archipelago, which is situated in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea about 80 km from Sicily. Malta is one of the smallest states in the world, and a renowned touristic destination thanks to its wonderful seascape and the rich historical and artistic heritage which includes also nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Birgu, built in medieval times on a promontory on the south side of the Grand Harbour in Malta, played a vital role in the great Siege of Malta in 1565 being the site of a major battle between the Knights of the Order St. John’s of Jerusalem (also known as Knights Hospitalier) and the Ottoman Empire. After the Siege, Birgu was given the title "Città Vittoriosa" (meaning "victorious city" in Italian).

ALARME! is a military reenactment that portrays the historic and turbulent tenure of Malta by French troops, following Napoleon’s landing and conquest of the islands in 1798-1800. While on their way to the Egypt Campaign the French troops led by Napoleon took the archipelago in year 1798. The Maltese people started soon a rebellion which lasted until 1800. The reenactment gives an account of the French troops’ invasion of Malta, the subsequent attempt to administer the Maltese Islands by a new Republican government in substitution of the traditional rule of the Order St. John’s of Jerusalem, the rebellion of the Maltese people that led to the blockade of the French troops inside the harbour towns. The reenactment culminates with the surrender of the French troops to the British. The audience will enjoy several dramatized scenes accompanied by historical narration and portraying the arrival of the French troops, the skirmishes with the Maltese militia, the landing of the British marines forcing the French garrison to surrender. The reenactment, which is organized by Malta Tourism Authority and is directed by the Historical Reenactment Group of Malta, starts at 11.00 hrs and lasts 50 minutes. The visitors may take advantage of this visit to explore Birgu and its historic attractions, e.g. Inquisitors Palace, Maritime Museum, Malta at War Museum and the Collachio area, where the Knights built their auberges.
