The Event

Benevento is a comune in Campania, located at the confluence of the rivers Calore Irpino and Sabato, 50 km northeast of Naples. The ancient Beneventum was supposedly founded by Diomedes after the Trojan War, being one of the most important cities of southern Italy during the Roman times and in later periods.

Benevento Longobarda is a series of historical re-enactments related to the monumental complex of St. Sofia, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the seven groups of historic buildings known under the name “Longobards in Italy, Places of the Power (568-774 AD)”. The event is dedicated to Arechi II, last Duke and first Lombard Prince of Benevento, who completed the construction of the Church of St. Sofia and founded the monastery.

Some important episodes of the life of Arechi II and of the city’s history are reenacted at the authentic places, including the translation of the relics of St. Eliano to the Church of St. Sofia, AD 783. All events are accompanied by various displays and activities illustrating life, crafts and entertainment of the 8th century: performances of street artists, archery, courtyard of musicians, medieval market, workshops on early medieval crafts and ancient cuisine. Several tournaments and contests are held, involving the visitors of all ages.
