ITALY

Bari, Italy, May 9, AD 1087: 62 sailors and a unusual but quite precious cargo... the relics of St. Nicholas of Myra land in Bari. An incredible act of bravery, an event that changed the story of the whole city forever and relives today through a wealth of religious and civil initiatives and events, and a great historical parade combining history, culture and faith...

The Event

St. Nicholas of Myra is one of the most venerated saints by the Orthodox and Catholic Christians. Famous for his numerous miracles, virtuous life and considered the protector of sailors, he died in Myra around the year 350. His body was stolen by sailors from Bari who returned triumphantly to Bari on May 9 in 1087. The relics were placed in a crypt, and afterwards in the Basilica dedicated to the Saint. From the holy bones exudes miraculously a liquid called "manna", which is supposed to possess the healing properties.

Each year in May Bari, the capital of the Apulia region, celebrates the triumphant entrance of the sailors into the city in 1087. The solemn parade takes place, commemorating the arrival of the relics of St. Nicholas and involving hundreds of reenactors in faithfully reproduced period costumes. The event represents the arrival of the Saint, the courage of the sailors, a venture that has shaped relations between East and West.
