Le Festival Arelate, journées romaines d'Arles
18-26.08.2018
Arles (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region)
FRANCE

every year under the radiant sun of August the Romans set again their summer camps in the town once known as the "Little Rome of Gaul", and where still today the fabulous legacy of Rome is so intensely present and indissociable from the everyday life. A breathtaking and full-immersive 2.000-years time-travel for a whole week back to the glorious Roman Age...

Geographical, cultural and historical context

The city of Arles (Arelate in ancient Latin) is located in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, at about 30km from Nimes, 90km from Marseille, 230km from Nice, 300km from Lyon and 600km from Paris. The Romans took the town in 123 BC and expanded it into a quite flourishing city of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis, with a canal link to the Mediterranean Sea. Today, the Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Event description and programme

The Festival Arelate, dedicated to the Roman Age, since 2007 draws its inspiration from the site of Arles, where the fabulous legacy of Rome is still so intensely present and integral to daily life. Arelate is a summer event that combines historical accuracy, the pleasure of discovery and usability by giving life to the ancient heritage of the city. The programme, unique and varied, is designed to provide the opportunity for everyone to rediscover the ancient heritage of the place and learn more about life and traditions of the Roman period. "Arelate" is an eclectic week of discovery of the Roman world for all ages and tastes thanks to interactive activities and workshops, living histories and reenactments that are both fun and educational and help to revive the past in a monumental arena inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and an exceptional archaeological museum (Musée départemental Arles antique). The rich programme includes also the "Peplum film festival", guided tours and theatrical visits, street performances, Roman taverns and banquets, gladiators' fights, legionary drills and maneuvers, chariot races, battle reenactments and much more.
