Appignano, Bellente Brigand

Bellente the Brigand, AD 1812
Bellente il Brigante
Dates 2017 to be announced
Appignano (Marche region)
ITALY

The Event

Appignano, town of very ancient origins, with impressive medieval walls still now surrounding the town and once famous for the production of ceramics, is located in Le Marche region, in the province of Macerata, about 35 km southwest of Ancona and about 25 km northwest of Macerata.

Every year is reenacted a cross-section of local community events from the Napoleonic age following the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, when also in Le Marche region was introduced the conscription law having the aim to strengthen an army based hitherto on voluntary recruitment. As in many other areas of Italy, also here the young conscripts often do not show up for military service, and prefer to hide themselves in the countryside, forming bands of brigands.

At the head of one of these appears a young man from Appignano, Pietro Masi, nicknamed Bellente, who soon becomes a folk hero much beloved by the people. The event includes an historical dinner based on nineteenth century recipes and a performance stage in costume about the history of the brigand band perfectly mirroring the one of the local community, at the time much confused between the legacies of the old papal power and the new political order of the Napoleonic state.
