Agde, Agde over the Time

Agde over the Time
Agde au fil du Temps
Dates 2018 to be announced
Agde (Languedoc-Roussillon region)
FRANCE

Geographical, cultural and historical context

Agde is located at the intersection of the Canal du Midi, the River Hérault and the Mediterranean Sea, at about 4 km from the sea and 750 km from Paris, in the Hérault department of southern France. The 240 km long Canal du Midi, a waterway linking Toulouse to Sète, was built in the 17th century, and is today listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Agde is the final stage of the Canal du Midi before the Thau lagoon and Sète. The town is one of the oldest in France right behind Béziers and Marseilles with a rich history spanning thousands of years.: founded as Agathe Tyche ("good fortune") was a 5th-century B.C. Greek colony settled by Phocaeans from Massilia (today Marseilles). Agde displays an architectural layout that is unique in Languedoc-Roussillon with the charm of its labyrinth of small streets, lined with houses and buildings of the historic centre built out of black volcanic stone from Mont Saint-Loup, thus the town is often called the “Perle Noire” (Black pearl). Small brightly coloured shopping streets and craftsmen's workshops animate the heart of the downtown. Previously a trading post, Agde prospered over centuries thanks to maritime trade.

Event description and programme

Every year this beautiful city goes back through the centuries to commemorate its history in the great re-enactment festival "Agde over the Time". For two days the visitors plunge in 2600 years of history and discover streets and places alive in the time of Greeks, Romans, in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Ages of Enlightenment, of the Revolution and of the Empire, through various displays and initiatives recalling the maritime traditions, folklore and history. Historical reenactment demonstrations, workshops, games and contests for the spectators, as well as ancient entertainment and exciting music and dance shows involve citizens and guests in an unforgettable journey into history in a sort of open-air living museum.
