The Event

Aarhus is the second largest city and the principal port of Denmark. On its Højbjerg suburb the Moesgaard Museum is situated, dedicated to archaeology and ethnography, which is also the organizer of the annual historical event called the Viking Moot.

The event takes place on the last weekend in July - the one closest to July 29 (which is the feast day of St. Olaf, celebrated in Aarhus as a Fair day in the Middle Ages and probably also in the Viking Age). The event took place for the first time in 1977 and presents the oldest and biggest Viking market in Scandinavia. Vikings from all parts of the continent meet at the Viking Moot to recreate the festive market stalls where professional craftsmen produce fine items of iron, wood, leather, silver, wool, amber, glass, willow, and many other materials. Visitors can try their skills at different activities, organized for every age and every taste. The highlights of the Viking Moot are the combats of warriors and fierce horsemen displays. Naturally, there are many goodies to taste at the market, and the pleasant smells of meals cooked over open fires tempt the visitors to become acquainted with the Viking cuisine.
